The first section of the film, Kadhala Kadhala, tells the story of a couple played by Jayaram and Priya Anand. Meenakshi (played by Jyothika) is a rich man's daughter who falls in love with Karthik (played by Vikram), a poor auto-rickshaw driver. Though her father initially disapproves, he eventually agrees to have Karthik as his son-in-law on the condition that he becomes rich within three months. Karthik agrees but fails to meet this condition because his father suffers from paralysis and can't work anymore. The rest of the film deals with Karthik's attempts to succeed in business. The second half of the film, Mankatha, deals with Karthik's attempts to make a name for himself. He becomes a bullock cart driver and later a ticket collector in a train. He also starts his own courier business and takes some loans from moneylender Ravi (played by Sudheer). He becomes wealthy, but some enemies continue causing him problems. The climax is when he wins against his foes and traps them in an iron cage. The film closes with a message that happiness only comes from family. The third section of the film, Kanna Laddu Ki Pudhithu, is about Karthik's daughter Kavya (played by Priyadarshini) being married to a young man from a well-to-do family, Madhu (played by Vikram). Karthik and his sister-in-law Madhumitha (played by Jyothika) initially disapprove of this marriage but have to accept it when they see that Madhu is not heartless and wants to educate his wife well. They decide to educate Kavya and help Madhu and Kavya live happily. Director Vijay had earlier worked with Vikram in "Sethu" (1999), which was a success. He had kept his eyes on Vikram ever since and wanted to cast him as the lead actor for this film, but felt that Vikram's look was not suitable for the role. To change his look, he asked Vikram to reduce his weight. As a result, Vikram lost , and saw a significant dip in his weight from 75 kg to 55 kg. The film was shot extensively in Mumbai and Kerala. It took 100 days to complete shooting and post-production work involved an additional 50 days. Vijay had four different directors work on the film's four different sections. He himself directed the first section of the film, Kadhala Kadhala. Thirupathisamy shot the second half of the film, Mankatha. The third section of the film was directed by Ramesh Selvan, and Vignesh Shivan directed the final part of the film, Kanna Laddu Ki Pudhithu. Vijay later said that he wanted to give important roles to newcomers so that they could get noticed. He also added that he wanted to "break" Jyothika after her role in "Unnale Unnale". cfa1e77820
